Unemployment is 1,827,000, down 11,000 from last month’s published figure (quarterly headline down 35,000) and the unemployment rate is 5.5%, no change on last month and down 0.1 percentage points on last quarter. The number of claimant unemployed is 763,800, down 12,600 on last month, and the claimant rate is 2.3%. The number of workless young people (not in employment, full-time education or training) is 1,123,000, down 25,000 on the quarter, representing 15.4% of the youth population (down 0.3 percentage points). Youth unemployment (including students) is 735,000, down 5,000 on the quarter. There are 2.5 unemployed people per vacancy. Generous welfare systems do not create a culture of dependency and actually make people more keen to work, a major Europe-wide study has found. The research released by the British Sociological Association comes as all major parties indicate they want to reduce spending on benefits. Survey responses from 19,000 people in 18 European countries, including the UK, indicated that the sums spent on welfare had a positive impact on people’s desire to find work. Work Programme performance figures Official Work Programme Figures released today show that just over 400,000 people have found lasting work of at least 6 months on the Work Programme and more than 150,000 have stayed in a job for at least 18 months. The labour market figures published on 18 February suggest that a degree of renewed momentum has returned to the labour market following the slowdown we have noted in previous months. Duncan Melville, Chief Economist at Inclusion, commented: “Employment is up by 103,000 in the three months to October to December 2014, higher than the average quarterly increase seen over the previous six months.
