Black History Month 2025 – Standing Up Against Prejudice

Black History Month 2025

October is Black History Month, a chance for us to come together and celebrate the achievements and contributions of the Black community all over the world, not just in the past, but in the here and now.

This year’s theme of “Standing Firm in Power and Pride” is as poignant as it is timely. Looking back into history, Black people have challenged the prejudice of countless institutions and governments, calling for change.

Across the world, civil rights movements have led to laws being rewritten and society becoming fairer and more inclusive. Through power and pride, incredible things can be achieved.

Learning From Experience

Black History Month isn’t just about Black history, although we do need to understand the past to build a better present and future. It’s about celebrating cultural identity and heritage in all its beautiful variety.

Black History Month reminds us that we can empower and support others by sharing stories of resilience and strength. With that in mind, I’d like to take a moment to share a story of my own.

As someone of mixed heritage myself, I’m incredibly passionate about cultural identity. Growing up, I witnessed the struggles my mother faced as a Black woman in a mixed marriage.

Her determination and strength to overcome the obstacles she faced have inspired me throughout my life, but her experiences have also taught me a great deal about resilience.

A Lesson In Resilience

Like any life skill, resilience is not always something that comes naturally. It needs to be practised to keep it sharp.

Self-awareness and a positive mindset are important when it comes to individual resilience, but the relationships we have with those around us also have a part to play.

The ability of a community to come together and stand against injustice creates a better society for everyone.

Power and pride have been exercised by Black communities across history, all over the world, to initiate positive change. This year’s Black History Month reminds us that we can accomplish so much more if we stand together.

Black British History Milestones

This year’s Black History Month theme is not just about remembrance. It’s also a call to action, inviting all of us to stand strong in our power with pride, and to actively demand change in the world, so Black voices can be heard and valued.

We can take inspiration from those who came before us. Looking back at Black history in the UK, there are countless examples of individuals and communities who challenged injustice and fought for the rights of Black communities.

The Campaign Against Racial Discrimination in the 1960s saw activists call on the government to bring in anti-racist and anti-discrimination legislation to protect the rights of Black and Asian people. The campaign played a pivotal role in shaping the Race Relations Act of 1965, the first legislation of its kind in the UK to protect minority groups.

The British Black Panthers are another fine example of a community taking a stand against injustice and discrimination. Formed in 1968, the British Black Panthers embodied strength and pride as they took on the authorities, including the police and legal system, and won.

These examples show what can be achieved when we come together and demand change. We can all take inspiration from these brave individuals and groups as we work together to tackle discrimination and injustice in our society today.

In Conclusion

Black History Month isn’t just about celebrating Black history, cultural identity and heritage. It’s about recognising how resilience and strength have helped Black communities, past and present, to challenge prejudice and bring about tangible change.

Unfortunately, prejudice and discrimination still exist in our world, and the battle is far from won. The countless historical acts of resilience and strength are lessons for the generations to come on how, when we stand together, anything is possible.
